Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) helps to treat people struggling with depression. TMS uses a targeted magnetic field to stimulate areas of the brain that control mood and are thought to be underactive in people with depression or anxiety. The magnetic pulses are administered rapidly, producing long-lasting changes in brain activity. TMS has been proven to be safe and effective long-term, and is a good option for pregnant women as it does not impact their bloodstream. To assess if TMS is right for you, you would have a full evaluation to consider is this an appropriate treatment plan for your specific situation.
Upon starting TMS therapy, clients will be fit for their own helmet, outfitted with a metal coil that transmits the magnetic pulses. The helmet allows these pulses to be directed to the exact position in the brain that is required to be stimulated. You will remain awake during the treatment, and there are no after-effects, so you can engage in normal activities immediately after treatment, and plan to drive yourself to and from your appointment. Each session takes about 20-30 minutes, after your initial visit.
